The chefs and staff from ChinaTown Westlake are here! I am so happy that we have followed them to Hunan Lion so we can still eat up some of the tastiest Chinese food in Austin - again. We have been enjoying the chef's food/dishes since the mid 90s so the location and name may have changed, but the food is still suberb and the dishes remain the same.My family's favorite dishes are: The Little Lamb, Happy Family, Kung Pao Chicken, Buddha's Delight, Mala Duck, Chicken w/ Green Veggies, Beef w/ Mixed Veggies, and Sweet & Sour Pork. You can ask to make any dish spicy and it is worth it. Try the Chicken Lettuce Wraps App as a meal - it is a great size for a healthier option.Hot & Sour Soup is super yummy and has a lil kick of spice! My all time fav!Management is run by Eddie Chow who was previously located at Chinatown Westlake. If he is on site when you arrive, he will greet you (and he is funny!)We are super excited to have our little taste of heaven back in Austin and cannot wait to tell our friends!

I went for lunch during the week, and I was extremely happy to see their menu. Being vegetarian, I hate asking for tofu substitutions, especially for General Tso. It's not a problem - they let you pick your sauce - Genereal, Sweet/Sour, etc, and your 'meat'.It was the second best General Tso I've ever had.Egg drop soup was great too.

Another great feature is that it's located next to sprouts, and across from Wheatsville - not any where near a HEB!!!! Perfect day or evening - solo, with a date or friends.
Title: Houston loves Hunan's Lion!!!!  9/30/2014 11:19:56 AM
Finally found a beautifully dressed and spiced restaurant in this little Honky Tonk Austin. Ugh finally....the duddly do-rights were quiet, the staff was just the way Houston does it-delicious! I know I'm going to get crap for this but hey, this downHtown restaurant adventurer will recommend this best place to dine-I was in zen heaven. Best advertising is "old school word of mouth", i will drop this name HL to everyone I meet, met or know in or out of Austin! And they will prepare their meals w/out MSG!!!! Yep, so worth; every bite, ambiance, and sound-peace. Ahhhh-finally,

Went there Friday for lunch. The new owners have made the place look nice.Unfortunately, the food was a disappointment. Not only are my favorite dishes no longer on the menu (e.g. Singapore rice noodles) but also my my was greasy and not particularly flavorful. This is particularly disappointing as Hunan Lion used to be one of my favorite places for Chinese food in South Austin. I'm not sure I'll be back soon...

As Natalie mentioned in the previous review Chinatown from Westlake is back, but at Hunan Lion!My boyfriend and his family were religious Chinatown customers. When we found out that Chinatown closed down we were all devastated. It felt like we lost a family member. Well now we have our favorite Austin Chinese restaurant back! The dishes are identical to Chinatown Westlake! I love their sesame chicken!I do not know how the food was at Hunan Lion before the Chinatown staff moved in but this place is AMAZING now!

Quite possibly the best Chinese food I've ever had! Randomly went for lunch one day and had the sweetest waitress, I wish I could recall her name, but she remembered ours and said bye to us on the way out. So nice! The lunch combos are such a great deal, you get a whole meal with rice, and egg roll, crab wonton and soup all for like 8 or 9 bucks. Crazy cheap! The Sesame chicken and General Tso's are awesome! Definitely know where to go in Austin to get my chinese fix:-)

Calamari is frozen and processed. Wontons in soup are gummy and I'm pretty sure the broth was just vegetable bullion. Chicken Teriyaki was fine. Why do any further. I will never go to this place again.

They got our order wrong last week when we placed it, and it took them well over an hour to get our correct food to us. They were busy, though, and even called back to check with us to make sure they got it correct. We appreciated their thoroughness, but would have liked to have been able to eat our dinner together. Also, I find their prices to be a little high.Thank you, though, for making our order right. =)

Hunan Lion has gone WAY downhill since it changed ownership a year or so ago. We'd been going to it for many years but we're done. They've been pushing their delivery service recently, so thought we'd try that as we wanted to stay in tonight. Delivery was very fast and delivery person very pleasant.Schezwan green beans--overdone and soggy. Crispy flounder (think that what it's called) disgustingly greasy and tasteless. Long John Silver's would have been a huge improvement. Lobster with black bean sauce was a tiny serving. They sent the wrong sauce for the fish.House soup was good. This seems to be the original recipe, and was hot and delicious. We give it "five "Icks". We've eaten in the restaurant itself a few times in the last year and been really disappointed. Expensive and disgusting.Judy L.
