Hunan Lion has become our go-to place for Chinese takeout. My husband and I shopped around considerably before committing to Hunan Lion, and were surprised by the lack of decent Chinese food options outside of the north side of town. Is this place authentic? Nah. But it cooks up some damn good Americanized Chinese food at reasonable prices, you can make most of their dishes into dinner combos with soup and egg roll, they deliver, and their staff are super nice. They've even called back several times to confirm things with my order - when has that ever happened before???Rumor has it that the food here is much better than it was in recent years, since the chef from the Chinatown in Westlake moved over recently. I can't speak to this myself, but I've always loved a good rumor and it only seems right to spread it.

This place has great food!! I ordered and had it delivered. I got crab puffs, veggie egg roll, and salt and pepper chicken. It was sooo tasty.

I was recently introduced to Singapore noodles and found some great ones here at Hunan Lion. I leave out the meat and egg and add tofu and it's delicious!. we also love their veggie pot stickers. My mom had the crab puffs which were flat and chewy. not good. Maybe it was because we had delivery on a sunday night? The people are always really friendly and say hi to my little one.

New Years Eve and you're open? Yes, please. Delivery for $3? Yes, please. Ordered online, selected delivery option. Received a call 10 minutes later from Hunan Lion; 'You can pick up in 20 minutes, or delivery will be over an hour'. I think, thanks for letting me know! Yes, I'll just pick up, we appreciate the call. One problem? It's too late to take off the $3 charge, though, she says. errr.... ok?Fast forward 20 minutes, we pull in to pick up. My husband runs in while I wait in the car. Fast forward 25 minutes, husband has now asked 4 times about when our food will be ready, only to receive the same answer "almost ready, another couple of minutes". At 45 minutes in the car (over an hour since we ordered), I come in and tell my husband that we should just bail. The lady at the front says there was a mix up in the kitchen and that it will just be another minute. 10 minutes later, the food finally comes out. Everything but the egg drop soup is cold. Sigh. The lady says she'll take off $10 for the wait, but doesn't produce a receipt or ask us to sign ('what?'). She said that since we ordered online we got an email receipt. The email receipt had the $3 delivery charge, plus the full amount. Never again, Hunan Lion. Your deceitful, thieving business practices aren't worth the hassle for mediocre, cold, I-was-hungry-when-I-ordered-but-now-it's-bedtime, Chinese food.

Sadly Hunan Lion was acquired by Chinatown and despite not changing the name, they did change the recipes. It's serviceable but no longer one of my favorites.

My 100th Yelp Review- woo hoo!! I am one very picky Chinese food eater. There was a placed in North Austin that I absolutely loved but they closed down a year ago now. Since then, I have yet to find a place that compared. That is until I stopped into Hunan Lion on Saturday. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted and taken to a table. As we were walking to our table, another employee(just walking through the restaurant) said hello and asked how we were doing. It was very nice. When we sat down I was impressed with the extensive menu. They even have edamame on the menu!! I asked our waitress if they could make it spicy and she said of course! Perfect!I ordered the beef with broccoli and the hubby ordered Kung Pao chicken. Both were great. The broccoli was perfectly cooked and the sauce was divine. The beef wasn't my favorite, but definitely not bad. I think next time, I'll stick with chicken though. The veggie roll was perfectly crunchy on the outside, and piping hot on the inside. The best part was the egg drop soup, for sure! So many Chinese restaurants make their egg drop soup with chives, corn, veggies, etc. That's not how it should be. It's EGG drop soup, so it should just be the broth and egg. Hunan Lion got the recipe down, perfectly!!!This place is delicious and I can't wait to go back.
